Our Mission

This is more than advocacy.
It is action.

Breaking Barriers is an athlete mental health advocacy and education organization. We exist to break the stigma, amplify voices, build education, and create real, lasting change in the culture of sport.

WHAT WE BELIEVE.

We are reimagining how the world views mental health in sports. Every voice matters, and every struggle deserves understanding.

Our work is built on the belief that mental health is not a weakness to be hidden, a problem to be managed quietly, or a topic too uncomfortable to name out loud. For too long, athletic culture has defined strength as the ability to push through pain without flinching, to show nothing, to need nothing. Athletes learn early that vulnerability has a cost: playing time, starting spots, scholarships, the respect of their teammates and coaches. So they stay silent. They perform. And they carry everything alone. We believe vulnerability is strength. We believe open, stigma-free dialogue is what actually helps athletes reclaim their wellbeing. We believe the most powerful thing an athlete can do is ask for help, and that it is the system's job to make that safe. This is not just awareness. It is a culture-shifting conversation. And it is the beginning of a more honest, more human approach to mental health in sport.

The weight of the jersey shouldn't crush the person wearing it.

Athletes are struggling.

The pressure to perform at an elite level often comes at a profound personal cost. Behind the highlights and the trophies, many athletes are navigating a complex landscape of mental health challenges that go unseen and unsupported.

Performance Anxiety

Burnout

Depression

Grief

Identity Loss

Eating Disorders

The culture of sport has historically prioritized physical toughness over emotional well-being, creating an environment where seeking help is often viewed as a sign of weakness rather than a step toward resilience.

Despite increased awareness, there remains a massive gap between the availability of resources and the willingness of athletes to use them. We are here to bridge that gap by dismantling the stigma and building a new playbook for mental health.

Real change does not start with one athlete. It starts with the whole system.

The Athletic Director sets the tone for coaches. Coaches set the tone for team captains. Captains set the tone for athletes. Stigma, and psychological safety, move through every layer of an athletic organization. When leadership does not genuinely prioritize mental health, no athlete at the bottom of that chain will ever feel safe enough to speak up, no matter how many resources exist. This is why Breaking Barriers works with the entire ecosystem: athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents. Not because we want to lecture anyone. Because real, lasting change in athletic culture requires every level of that system to shift. Together.

01

EXPRESS:
Amplify Every Voice.

Every athlete has a story that deserves to be heard. We create safe, visible platforms for athletes to share their mental health experiences, because the most powerful tool against stigma is truth. When one athlete speaks, another athlete realizes they are not alone. That moment of recognition is where change begins. Through storytelling, social media advocacy, and community content, we help athletes reclaim their voice and reframe vulnerability as the courage it actually is.

02

EDUCATE:
Build Mental Health Literacy.

Knowledge changes behavior. We deliver evidence-based education to athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators, building the mental health literacy that turns awareness into action. Our workshops, training programs, and free resources are grounded in clinical expertise and shaped by a genuine understanding of what athletes face. We do not just hand out information. We build the competency that makes athletic programs genuinely safer.

03

COMBAT:
Drive Real Change.

This is where advocacy becomes action. We challenge the narratives that keep athletes silent in locker rooms, in coaching culture, and in athletic departments. We advocate for systemic change, institutional accountability, and real investment in athlete wellbeing. We build pathways to actual care, not just awareness. Because every athlete who suffers in silence is not a personal failure. It is a system failure. And it is one we refuse to accept.

Every level of the
athletic ecosystem.

Athletes

You deserve support that does not cost you your playing time, your scholarship, or how your team sees you. We are building the community, resources, and pathways that make it genuinely safe to ask for help.

Coaches

You are often the first person who notices something is wrong. Most of you have never been trained for what to do next. We help you build the knowledge, language, and skills to support your athletes and lead a healthier team culture.

ADs & Admins

The culture of your department begins with you. We provide education, tools, and assessments that help you lead a program where athletes actually thrive.

Parents

You are one of the most powerful influences in your athlete's mental health. We help you understand sport culture, recognize when something is wrong, and support your athlete in ways that help rather than add to the pressure.

Join us. Let us break the silence, end the stigma, and build something stronger together.
