Exploring who you are beyond the game

Athletes often face intense pressure to perform, leading to a complex relationship between their identity and their sport. This pressure can stem from various sources, including coaches, teammates, family, fans, and even self-imposed expectations. Over time, this can blur the line between what you do and who you are. When performance becomes the primary measure of self-worth, it can lead to mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and burnout.

This journal section encourages you to reflect on your own experiences and perceptions, helping you to navigate the balance between athletic identity and personal well-being.

Prompts to Reflect On:

Understanding the Connection Between Identity and Performance

  • How would I describe myself to someone who doesn't know I’m an athlete? What would I leave out?

  • What messages have I received (from coaches, family, media) about what makes an athlete “worthy” or “successful”?

  • Do I feel like I’m only valuable when I’m performing well? Why or why not?

  • If I couldn’t compete for a while, what parts of my identity would still be strong? What parts would feel lost?

Processing Pressure & Expectations

  • Where does the pressure I feel come from myself, others, or both?

  • How do I react internally when I fall short of expectations?

  • What fears come up when I imagine not performing at my best?

  • How do I define success and has that definition changed over time?

Reclaiming a Broader Sense of Self

  • What qualities do I bring to my sport that have nothing to do with stats or scores?

  • What am I passionate about outside of athletics?

  • Who am I when no one is watching, coaching, or cheering?

  • What does it feel like to give myself permission to just be, not perform?

You are not your results. You are not your setbacks. You are whole, even when you don’t feel like you’re winning.

Use this space as a reset : a reminder that you’re more than your role on the team, more than your output, and more than anyone else's expectations.
